Writing Resources I Recommend if You Want to Be a Writer

| Advice

When people ask me how I became a writer, I thought the best way to answer is to compile a list of my favorite resources from books to classes. I hope you find this list helpful!

Writing Classes

  • UPOD Academy. If you want to pitch editors at the New York Times, literary agents at CAA, and meet fellow freelance journalists, I highly recommend signing up for a UPOD Academy weekend. David Hochman organizes the best of the best to chat. I’ve met some of the most amazing writers there too. BIPOC scholarships are available.
  • The Writing Barn. I’ve taken an online chapter book writing class through The Writing Barn and highly recommend it if you’re interested in writing fiction.
  • Writing Pad. A few of my friends have taught classes through the Writing Pad. They offer everything from TV writing to personal essays.
  • The Writers’ Co-Op Academy. If you need some business skills, I suggest checking out the course offerings and webinars. I’ve attended a few and they are always worth the time and money.
  • Self-Paced Fiction Classes with Lindsay Eagar. I’ve taken Lindsay’s Fast Draft Method and Storyteller workshop and it’s helped improve my fiction skills and time management.

Resources for Beginning Writers

  • How to Become a Professional Writer. This amazing list was shared with me by a librarian and her student who found this incredible guide. You’ll find classes to develop your classes, info about how to get a literary agent, and even college scholarships for writers.
  • Guide to Writing Picture Books. Josh Funk writes some of my favorite children’s books. He has a robust list of lessons for anyone starting out in children’s literature.

Writing Coaches

  • Jenni Gritters. Jenni co-runs the Writers’ Co-Op and also is a business coach. My one-on-one coaching session with Jenni completely changed my work-life balance. She helped me make a comprehensive plan for how to structure my work days and set boundaries for what type of work I would accept.”
  • David Hochman. David runs UPOD Academy and offers consultations as well. I’ve had one-on-one sessions that have helped me pinpoint clear next steps for selling my stories.

My Favorite Books on Writing

  • Story Genius by Lisa Cron. This book totally changed how I write novels. A must-read for fiction writers.
  • Before and After The Book Deal by Courtney Maum. She covers everything you would need to know.
  • Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. This book helps me when I’m dealing with self-doubt and creative fears.

Creative Podcasts I Listen to

I love listening to writers, editors, and creative folks talk about their creative processes. I’ve learned so much from these podcasts and I hope you do too!
